The K-1 Fiancé Visa allows the fiancé of a US citizen to enter the United States to marry within 90 days of arrival. It is a document-heavy, time-consuming process — but with clear understanding of the steps involved, it can be navigated smoothly.
1. You Must Have Met in Person
This is a strict requirement: both partners must have physically met within the 2 years before filing the I-129F petition. If you have not met, or if your last meeting was over 2 years ago, you must meet in person before filing. Keep solid proof of your meeting — photos together, flight tickets, and passport entry stamps.
2. The Process Takes a Long Time
On average, the entire K-1 process takes 8-14 months from filing the I-129F petition to USCIS review, NVC preparation, and finally the embassy interview. Do not let the timeline pressure you — these durations are standard in the system.
3. Your Evidence of Relationship Must Be Thorough
USCIS requires clear proof of a genuine relationship. Collect chat logs, emails, photographs, and records of calls. Build a comprehensive timeline of your relationship from the moment you first met. The more evidence you have, the stronger your case.
4. The Petitioner Must Meet Income Requirements
The US citizen filing the I-129F must demonstrate income at or above the federal Poverty Guidelines to sponsor their fiancé financially. If income falls short, a joint sponsor can be added to meet the requirement.
5. You Must Marry Within 90 Days
Once the beneficiary arrives in the United States, the marriage must take place within 90 days of entry. If this deadline is not met, the person must leave the country and the entire process must start over from the beginning.
